Reference
SC 8/62/3057
Date
[c. 1320]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas le Moygne of Abington Pigotts.
Name(s)
Moygne, Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Moygne requests remedy, he and his wife had brought an assize of novel disseisin against Bassingbourn and others named in the writ before the justices. Bassingbourn and other unknown men came and threatened their life and limb if they did not cease their writ or appear before the justices by which they lost their suit, which affray and threats are against the ordinances in such cases, and in delay of the common right in disrespect of the king and his crown.
Nature of endorsement
Because it was ordered that the justices before whom this assize was arraigned should do justice to the plaintiffs on this plea, they should sue before the justices etc.
Places mentioned
Abington (Abington Pigotts), [Cambridgeshire]
Wynepol (Wimpole), [Cambridgeshire]
Cambridge, [Cambridgeshire].
People mentioned
Warren de [Bassingbourn] of Wimpole
Robert de Maddingley, Justice of assize
Muriel [le Moygne], wife of the petitioner.
Note
The petition has been dated (on its guard) to c. 1320 on the basis of its link to SC 8/296/14786, and clearly forms part of the case detailed in CCR 1318-23, p.279. It probably forms an early stage in the process, since the endorsement tells the petitioners to sue before the justices of assize, which they appear to have done by November 1320.
