Reference
SC 8/61/3026
Date
[c. 1301]
Description
Petitioners
Edmund de Mortemer (Mortimer).
Name(s)
de Mortemer (Mortimer), Edmund
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Mortemer requests that the record and process of the plea by which the commonalty was seised of the free chase in his lands of Ceri and Cedewain be able to be brought before the prince and that justice be done to him. The commonalty demanded the free chase before Kneovyle and Corbet, and by an assize held without due warning being given to him, and with those claiming the chase being on the jury, the chase was adjudged to them. He has sued until the lordship of Montgomery came into the prince's hand.1)
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.2) The record and process should remain with the king, and let it be ordered to the prince that, as from his time, he execute and do that which shall be right.
Places mentioned
Ceri commote, [Montgomeryshire, Wales]
Cydewain (Cedewain) commote, [Montgomeryshire, Wales]
Montgomeryshire, [Wales].
People mentioned
Commonalty of the land of Montgomery
Bogo de Kneovyle, Justice
Robert Corbet, Justice
Roger Brabazon
[Edward of Caernarvon], Prince of Wales.
Note
The petition must date to the period 1301-1304. Edward of Caernarvon was made prince of Wales on 10 May 1301, and Mortimer was dead by 1304. The petition is likely to be earlier in this period so that c. 1301 seems a fair date for this petition.
