Reference
SC 8/61/3023
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Adam de Morleh (Morley).
Name(s)
de Morleh (Morley), Adam
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Morleh requests that he is able to have his land in Moreleigh which ought to have returned to him by right, and that he is able to recover his damages and destructions made in the land by Sampson. Morleh had leased the land to Sampson for 10 years and he had destroyed it and then given it to Wylynton. The lands have come into the king's hand and the heirs of Wylynton are seeking to recover it though they have no claim to it.
Nature of endorsement
If Morleh is seised of the land he should defend it by the law, and if not he should await the restitution of Wylynton's heirs and then sue at the common law.
Places mentioned
Tiverton, [Devon]
Morleh (Moreleigh), (Devon).
People mentioned
Hugh Sampson of Tiverton
Henry de Wylynton.
Note
The petition probably dates to 1327 or thereafter as Wylynton's estates were taken into the king's hand on 27 December 1321, and it does not seem that the heir was seeking their return until December 1327 (CFR 1319-27, p.84; CFR 1327-37, p.75). In 1327 Wylynton's heir was still only of 14 years of age. The guard comments suggest that this petition is earlier, and can be dated to the period 1322-7, and whilst this is possible, a date to 1327 or thereafter seems far more likely.
