15 sheets of 'Balkan Overprint Maps', based on sheets of GSGS 4072 '1:500,000 Europe (Air)', and 'Middle East 1:500,000' (not published as GSGS series), and together showing the entire Balkan Peninsula. Each sheet is overprinted in colour with detailed information about terrain, roads, railways, air stations, obstacles to military movements etc. The sheets are: (1) MDR 553/10378 'Varna' (GSGS 4072 sheet NE 42/26); (2) MDR 553/10052 'Tirana' (GSGS 4072 sheet NE 40/18); (3) MDR 553/10310 'Thessaloniki (Salonika)' (GSGS 4072 sheet NE 40/22); (4) tracing of (3), showing amendment, February 1944; (5) MDR 553/10213 'Sofia' (GSGS 4072 sheet NE 42/22); (6) MDR 553/10035 'Shkodra (Scutari)' (GSGS 4072 sheet NE 42/18); (7) MDR 553/10093 'Larisa' (Middle East sheet North J 34 NE); (8) MDR 553/10071 'Kerkira' (Middle East sheet North J 34 NW); (9) MDR 553/10368 'Istanbul' (GSGS 4072 sheet 40/26); (10) MDR 553/10179 'Fiume' ([GSGS 4072] sheet NE 44/14); (11) MDR 553/10008 'Chieti' (GSGS 4072 sheet NE 42/14); (12) MDR 553/10463 'Beograd (Belgrade)' (GSGS 4072 sheet NE 44/18); (13) MDR 553/10008 'Chieti' (GSGS 4072 sheet NE 42/14); (14) MDR 553/10131 'Athínai (Athens)' (Middle East sheet North J 34 SE); (15) MDR 553/10035 'Shkodra (Scutari)' (GSGS 4072 sheet NE 42/18).
Each sheet has reference tables; key to adjoining sheets. The base GSGS 4072 sheets were compiled and drawn at the War Office or the Ordnance Survey, some in 1940, some in 1942; and heliographed at the Ordnance Survey, some in 1940, some in 1942. Some sheets are of the first edition; others bear additions and corrections, some to January 1942, some to July 1942. Some sheets have air information supplied by HQ RAF Middle East, March 1943. Each sheet was reproduced by 17 Map Reproduction Section RE, 19 Field Survey Company RE or 512 Field Survey Company RE, at a date between August 1943 and January 1944. Each overprint was compiled and drawn by Military Intelligence (Topographic), General Headquarters, Middle East Forces, at a date between November 1943 and January 1944; and reproduced by 17 Map Reproduction Section RE, 19 Field Survey Company RE or 512 Field Survey Company RE, at a date between November 1943 and January 1944, for Military Intelligence (Topographic) General Headquarters, Middle East Forces, from tracings supplied by MI (T). Dimensions: printed sheets between 64 cm x 90 cm and 63 cm x 84 cm; tracing 33.5 cm x 21 cm.
