Description

Middle East: Ottoman Empire, Persia. ['Map of the Turco-Persian Frontier made by Russian and English officers in the years from 1849 to 1855 on the Scale of 1/73050 and reduced to the Scale of 1/253440 or 4 English miles at the Ordnance Survey office, Southampton']: 2 sheets only of an 'identic map' on multiple sheets (covering territory now in Iran and Iraq): (13) sheet 5; (14) sheet 6. Rectangular tangential projection. Photozincographed by Ordnance Survey, 1873. MS additions, coloured, showing a frontier line proposed by Turkey (red), and a frontier line proposed as a basis for negotiations in Foreign Office despatch number 75, 6 March 1913 (blue). Dimensions: (13) 96 cm x 67 cm; (14) 96 cm x 66 cm.

Formerly filed with despatch number 271 from Sir Gerard Lowther, British Ambassador, Constantinople, to the Foreign Office, 5 April 1913. These items were prepared by the Foreign Office; the original map enclosed in Lowther's despatch was returned to him, at his request, and has not survived. The colours of the MS additions do not correspond to the description in the despatch.

The term 'identic' suggests that the map was intended to express the unanimous view of the British and Russian governments regarding the Turco-Persian frontier.
