Administrative / biographical background

The project for the memorial was organised by a committee established in 1901, which obtained designs and raised funds by subscription. The memorial, designed by Thomas Brock, was erected at the western end of The Mall, outside the gates of Buckingham Palace, in 1911. Responsibility for the memorial was handed over to the Office of Works in January 1914.
