Administrative / biographical background

The project for a memorial to the Duke of York was organised by a committee established in 1821, which obtained designs and raised funds by subscription. The memorial (a column designed by Benjamin Wyatt, topped by a bronze statue by Richard Westmacott) was erected in 1831-34. Responsibility for the monument's upkeep was disputed from the mid-1860s until 1887, when the Office of Works finally agreed to take control.
