Administrative / biographical background: The Square was laid out in the 1820s and acquired its name in 1830. It was brought under the control of the Office of Woods, Forests, Land Revenues, Buildings and Works by the Trafalgar Square Act 1844. On the separation of the Offices of Woods and Works in 1851, it passed into the control of the Office of Works.
