In accordance with the Tribunals of Inquiry (Evidence) Act 1921 this inquiry was set up by order of the United Kingdom Government at Westminster and the Government of Northern Ireland to investigate the events of Sunday 30 January 1972 which led to loss of life in connection with the procession in Londonderry on that day.
he Tribunal was headed by the Right Honourable Lord Widgery and held seventeen sessions of substantive hearings in Coleraine County Hall between 21 February and 14 March during which 114 witnesses gave evidence and were cross-examined. Three further sessions were held in the Royal Courts of Justice in London on 16, 17 & 20 March to hear the closing speeches of Counsel for the relatives of the deceased, for the army and for the Tribunal.
