Cumberland to Chesterfield (private): Ligonier has returned from The Hague with the prince of Orange's answers. He encloses a copy [SP 87/22/163, 164]. He will tell the prince that it is impossible as things stand for him to leave the army for a single night, but he will offer to meet him at 'Westwesel' or Breda. He fears that the prince's answer will lead to a defensive and expensive campaign, and will endeavour to alter the situation. Dated at headquarters at 'Bauwel'. PS that reports are coming in fast of the advance of the enemy. ff. 321, 322
