Fawkener to Newcastle: the French have moved towards Dendermonde, perhaps to besiege it. Failure of an attempt to move in reinforcements. The French have detached infantry and cavalry from the army and from Dunkirk to besiege Ostend. Cumberland has sent the Royal Irish battalion there by sea via Flushing. He hopes no time will be lost in sending reinforcements from England. Transports to bring the cavalry out of Ostend. Cumberland is surprised he has heard nothing from England of the expedition of the pretender's son. The first they heard of it was an enquiry made to one of their trumpets by Saxe's secretary. The [French] king said at table that he had landed in Scotland with ten others. The great ship [Elisabeth]which went with him returned to Brest greatly damaged in an encounter with a British ship [Lion], but he went on in one of the small vessels [Du Teillay]. The persons who know Sir Hector McLean well will be sent over immediately. Dispositions of British, Dutch and Austrian elements of the army. Dated at camp at Vilvoorde. ff. 246-249
