The Key Points Intelligence Directorate originated in the Intelligence Section of the Camouflage Branch of the Air Ministry, where it compiled a list of vital industries on which to base the defence of those industries. It was transferred with its parent branch in September 1939 and became operational as the Key Points Intelligence Branch. It compiled and distributed information about damage at vital factories, public utilities, railway centres and other particularly important locations. It was designated a directorate in September 1942.
