Reference
SC 8/60/2992
Date
[1319-1320]
Description
Petitioners
Tenants of Mareham le Fen.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The tenants request remedy as they hold their lands from Bavent, who held in chief by the service of falconry. The bishop of Carlisle and his bailiffs of Horncastle have come and demanded tallage from the tenants though they hold no land from him only owing suit to the court of Horncastle every three weeks, and for this tallage they have distrained the tenants against the law of the land, and in prejudice of the king, and the great damage of Bavent and his tenants. Bavent and his ancestors had their estate in the manor before Horncastle came into the bishop's hand.
Nature of endorsement
They should come into Chancery and have a writ.
Places mentioned
Mareham le Fen, [Lincolnshire]
Horncastle, [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
Robert [de Bavent], son of Robert de Bavent
[John of Halton], Bishop of Carlisle.
Note
Bavent appears to have succeeded his father around June 28 1319, when the escheator was ordered to deliver his lands, but was dead by 29 August 1320, when the escheator was ordered to re-take his lands into the king's hands (CFR 1307-19, p.405; CFR 1319-27, p.32). The guard note dates the petition between these dates. Inquisitions post mortem for father and son are in CIPM vol.VI, nos. 158 & 270.
