SC 8/60/2984
Date
[c. 1249-c. 1286]
Description
Petitioners
? No Petitioner named
Nature of request
Copy of a grant by Theket to William, marshal of Lord Henry de Graham in marriage with Beatrice his daughter a moiety of those lands which were late of Richard Fitz Elsam with a toft and croft and all the houses built in the toft which pertain to the moiety, and a moiety of a meadow with bounds.
Nature of endorsement
Let it be ordered to Robert de Barton that after he has inspected the charter of Mareschall, he is to enquire as to any right that she has in this, and if William le Mareschal, late the petitioner's husband alienated the tenements to King Alexander, and if the they came into the hand of the bishop of Durham together with other lands and tenements in Tynedale by gift of the king or by another manner, and if by another manner then what, and if the petitioner after her husband's death remised the land or not, and where, and if it ought to be held from the king, and by what service and value per annum in all issues upon the premises, and he is to certify the king and his council.
People mentioned
Richard [de Theket], son of Patrick de Theket
Patrick de Theket
William, marshal of Lord Henry de Graham
Henry de Graham
Beatrice [de Theket], daughter of Richard de Theket
Richard Fitz Elsam.
Note
The charter is not dated, but as the petition to which it was appended records that by this grant the recipient granted it to Alexander III, King of Scotland, and it then came to Antony Bek, Bishop of Durham, the charter must realistically date to during the reign of Alexander III and not before. It would seem unlikely that Beatrice, the petitioner in SC 8/60/2983 when complaining about the loss of the land mentioned in the charter could be referring back from 1306 as far as 1249 and before, though this is not impossible. The charter is therefore ascribed the date range c. 1249-c. 1286.
