Nature of request
Malebys requests remedy be done to him since he will prove by whatever the court wishes to award that . . . Malebys when he was sherif was ordered to make Lascy come before the justices who had been assigned to enquire oyer and terminer into wrecks of the sea. He was unable to find him, and was ordered to seize the lands, goods and chattels of Lascy be seized into the king's hand. This he did, but Lascy sued a writ out of Chancery . . . by which the justices ordered Malebys to reseize the lands, goods and chattels into the king's hand, of which goods the king is now served by the sheriff's hand and by order of the justices. Afterwards Louther in the absence of Fitz William ordered by writ to the sheriff who succeeded Malebys that he levy a great sum from the lands and chattels of Malebys had . . . seized Lascy's goods into the king's hand by the justice's order whereby Malebys is grievously distrained.

The petition dates to c. 1316 since the petitioner is clearly stated to be the former sheriff, and he was replaced in May 1315 (List of Sheriffs, p.161).
