Description (What the record is about)
-
- Petitioners
- Hugh Madefray.
- Name(s)
- Madefray, Hugh
- Addressees
- King.
- Nature of request
- Madefray requests that . . . allowance be made for his costs for his farm . . . He had the manor of Denney which was formerly of the Templars. . . He was ordered to deliver it to the Hospitallers with the corn growing there . . . He had sown the corn at his own cost . . .
- Nature of endorsement
- Because it is accounted by the inspection of the rolls of Chancery that under the form of the writ which Madefray exhibited before the council it was ordered to the keepers of the lands and tenements that were of the Templars in Cambridgeshire to deliver the lands and the corn just as the writ supposes, let it be ordered by a writ in Chancery to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that they call before them the prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England and having heard the arguments of the parties, if they find that the corn was sown in the manor mentioned in the petition by Madefray and not by the king, and that it was delivered to the brothers Hospitallers as it is supposed, then the prior should be compelled to make satisfaction to Madefray to the value of the corn . . .
- Places mentioned
- Denney, Cambridgeshire.
- People mentioned
- Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England.
-
Note (Additional information about the record)
- The petition is very likely to date to late 1312 as it clearly relates to the transfer of property after the suppression of the Templars and the transfer of much of their property to the Hospitallers which occurred after April 1312. As it refers to crops that had been sown presumably in that year, it makes sense that the petition dates to later 1312 or soon thereafter.
