Date
[c. 1311]
Description
Petitioners
Richard Lovel.
Name(s)
Lovel, Richard
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Richard Lovel states that although he holds the manor of Wynford Eagle of the king's delivery, in exchange for part of the manor of Old Roxburgh, and the king was peacefully seised of the manor of Old Roxburgh, he is impleaded concerning the manor of Wynford Eagle by the heirs of Alexander Cheveryl, by a writ of mort d'ancestor. He has spent as much as he can on this, and requests the king's aid in his defence, or a grant elsewhere to the value of the manor.
Nature of endorsement
He is to uphold his estate, for himself and for the king, insofar as he properly can, as far as the judgment, which has not yet been brought: nor can it be brought without consulting the king. And when it has come to this, the king will do justice.
Places mentioned
Wynfred Egle (Wynford Eagle), Dorset
Old Roxburgh, [Roxburghshire, Scotland].
People mentioned
Alexander Cheveryl (Cheverel).
Note
CPR 1307-13 p.304 is dated 4 January 1311, and the petition would seem to date from after this - probably from not more than a year or two afterwards, as Alexander Cheveryl's heirs would be likely to claim immediately.CCR 1307-13 p.295 is dated 30 December 1310.
