Reference
SC 8/59/2933
Date
[1274-1278]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Lovetot; John de Lovetot.
Name(s)
de Lovetot; de Lovetot, Thomas; John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Two separate petitions from two brothers:1) Thomas de Lovetot states that the king had purged the debts that Roger de Lovetot, his father, owed the king's father from the time when he was Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, but that the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer have not done this, or made him certain allowances that they should. He asks that a search might be made for this purgation, which was returned in Chancery, and that the reasonable allowances that he claims might be made to him, and that he might be able to [missing, due to damage to ms] the remainder.2) John de Lovetot states Thomas de Lovetot has enfeoffed him with his lands, and that he entered the wardship of the manor of Wysall after the death of Robert de [Derley], but that he has been expelled by the Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, who claims that Robert held other lands of the king in chief, although he did not hold anything of the king through which the wardship of Wysall should come to him. This could be established by jury, but the council are refusing to do anything without the king. He asks that some loyal man be appointed to inquire into this, and, if it is found that the king has no right to the wardship, that it might be delivered to John.
Nature of endorsement
[On face: to first petition] He is to go to the Chancellor (or 'Chancery').[On face: to second petition] He is to go to the Chancellor, who knows the certification on this matter.
Places mentioned
Wyssowe (Wysall), Nottinghamshire.
People mentioned
Roger de Lovetot, formerly Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, father of petitioners
Robert de [Derley].
Note
A note on the dorse appears to assign this petition to Michaelmas in the king's fourth year (1275).CCR 1272-9 p.484 is dated 12 November 1278, and appears to be a response to this petition; but CCR 1272-9 p. 387 is dated 12 May 1277: and here Thomas de Lovetot appears to be secure in the wardship of Wysall. The reponse to CCR 1272-9 p.484 may well not be immediate. The date on the dorse appears to contradict a date of 1278.Roger de Lovetot was Sheriff of Nottinghamshire between 11 May 1255 and 23 October 1258.
