Description

Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
the herring and fish merchants of London
Nature of request
The citizens of London, and especially the herring and fish merchants of London, make three requests:1) They state that the burgesses of Great Yarmouth are preventing them from buying goods and loading and unloading their ships at Little Yarmouth, and will not let them dry fish there, but are taking all ships by force to Great Yarmouth, where they throw their contents out of them. This is contrary to their franchises, and they request a remedy.2) They state that when fishermen bring herring to Little Yarmouth, the burgesses of Great Yarmouth will not them sell it to anyone, but put their own men and brokers into the ships, to sell the herring to the merchants for far more than they pay the fishermen, with the result that alien fishermen are going back to their own countries, rather than to England. They request a remedy.3) They complain of the great harm coming to them, and to the king and his people, from a charter which the burgesses of Great Yarmouth purchased from the king's father within the last two years, by means of gifts to the Treasurer, and ask that it be corrected.
