Description
Petitioners
Merchants of London.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The merchants of London state that when their goods and merchandise were seized at Sluis in Flanders, because of damage allegedly inflicted at sea on certain Flemings by the English, the King asked the Count and towns of Flanders to release these goods, promising reasonable compensation to anyone who could prove this damage and would sue for it. They, however, would only release the London merchants' goods on mainprise. Some Flemish merchants' goods have now been seized at London for the said reason: they ask that they might not be released without sufficient mainprise to pay off the mainprise in Flanders.
Nature of endorsement
A writ is to be sent to the Mayor of London to inform himself about what has been done with the English merchants' goods in Flanders: and if he finds that they have been released, then he is to release the Flemings' goods in London and its suburbs. And if the goods of the English remain under arrest in Flanders, then the goods of the Flemings are to remain under arrest in London and its suburbs.
