Description
Petitioners
Mayor and community of London.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Mayor and community of London state that the King's stewards and marshals are sending bills to the Sheriffs of London to attach various citizens to answer to pleas of debt, trespass, contract, and other pleas, contrary to the Great Charter, the ordinances, and their charters and franchises; and they have allowed no challenges to this, but are distraining these citizens to answer on these matters; and the Sheriffs of London for the eleventh year have been charged in their accounts with the issues forfeited before the steward and marshals. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Because John de Cherleton and Roger le Palmere, citizens of London, who sue in this parliament for the same city did not have the charters of their liberties here to show the King's council, therefore this business is to be placed before the Chancellor, Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, that they, calling to themselves the justices of both Benches and others of the king's council there, having examined the charters etc., are to discuss the matter as the law demands and requires. And in the meantime they are to have a writ to the same Treasurer and Barons to suspend the levying of the issues contained in the petition.
