Date
[1318]
Description
Petitioners
Bakers of London.
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Bakers of London
Nature of request
The bakers of London complain that Henry le Galeys, Mayor of London, instituted a new punishment for defective bread, of being dragged through the city on a hurdle like a traitor, which was ordained outside parliament and the common counsel of the land, and is harsher than the punishments used elsewhere. For fear of this people do not wish to be bakers, and bakers are going into hiding for a quarter of a year and more to escape the assay of bread; and this is contrary to the Great Charter. They ask that when their bread is found to be defective, they might be punished by having all their flour confiscated instead; and that a writ might be sent to the Mayor and good people of London to inquire into whether this would be good and profitable for the King and his people.
Nature of endorsement
Because the judgment contained in the petition was previously ordained in the time of King Edward, father of the present lord king, it does not seem to the council that the lord king ought to change that judgment.
