Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
John de Bermingham, Earl of Louth.
Name(s)
de Bermingham, Earl of Louth, John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Earl of Louth, to whom they king granted a royal franchise in County Louth for term of life, afterwards enlarging that grant to one to the petitioner and his heirs male, complains that this has been delayed, and asks the king to put this grant into execution, or to grant him, in allowance for it, the manor of Moylagh, which belonged to Roger de Mortimer. He asks this in consideration of his great losses and damages at the hands of Roger Damarry and his associates.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the franchise: he is to have a writ to inquire into what damage this would be to the king if he granted it to the Earl, and how much the franchise is worth annually at its true value. And with regard to the manor: there is to be an inquiry into how Roger de Mortimer held it, and how much it is worth annually in all its issues; and when the king has been informed of this, he is to speak his will on this.
Places mentioned
County Louth, [Ireland]
Moylagh, [County Meath, Ireland]
Normandy, [France].
People mentioned
Roger de Mortimer
Roger Damarry (Damory).
Note
CPR 1317-21 pp.334-335 is dated 12 May 1319 and p.344 is dated 7 June 1319. C 145/112 m.12 (no. 21) is an inquisition taken at Drogheda (towards Meath) on 21 October 1331, which states that Richard son of John de Moylagh granted the manor of Moylagh to Roger Mortimer of Wigmore and his wife in 11 Edward II [1317-1318], that it was taken into the king's hand in 1322 and held until 1 Edward III [1327-1328] when it was restored to Roger and his wife, who held it until Roger's forfeiture in 1330. Robin Frame discusses this petition on p.162 of English Lordship in Ireland 1318-1361 (Oxford, 1982), putting it in the context of a visit by the Earl of Louth to England in 1321, with his subsequent assault by Roger Damory and others (as mentioned here), and flight to Normandy. All these things would seem to suggest a date of c. 1322 for this petition.
