Reference
SC 8/59/2901
Date
[c. 1334]
Description
Petitioners
Citizens of London.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The citizens of London state that whereas they have always been accustomed to but and sell herring and other merchandise at Little Yarmouth, the people of Great Yarmouth are now preventing them from doing this. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Because the answer is given to the petition of the commons that an oyer et terminer is to be granted both at the suit of the king and at the suit of the party, for all trespasses committed in the town of Great Yarmouth since the rendering of the judgment on the disputes which lately arose between the towns of Great Yarmouth and Little Yarmouth, they are to sue the said oyer et terminer if they wish, or have writs of trespass formulated for their case, for each individual person.
Places mentioned
London
Petite Jernemuth (Little Yarmouth), [Suffolk]
Grant Jernemuth (Great Yarmouth), [Norfolk].
People mentioned
People of Great Yarmouth.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? 1334', with reference to SC 8/59/2902, which describes one attack on a London citizen by the people of Great Yarmouth in language very similar to this general petition. There is also a reference to Rot. Parl. vol. II, p.376, a later English summary of a petition on the roll of the parliament of February 1334. This asks that certain people might be appointed to hear the disputes between the towns of Great Yarmouth and Little Yarmouth, and receives the response that the judgments made between them should stand. It does not seem especially relevant, except in that it mentions judgments made between the two towns. From the endorsement to this petition, it seems that the situation has changed, which suggests that this petition may be slightly later.CPR 1334-8 p.430 is dated 3 May 1337.
