Description
Petitioners
William de Leicester, clerk; John de Breydeston (Braydeston).
Name(s)
de Leicester; de Breydeston (Braydeston), William; John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
clerk
Nature of request
The petitioners seek a writ to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer ordering them to search the account rolls of Hugh Matefry. They show that in the first year of his reign the king delivered to them custody of the goods and chattels of Archbishop Reynolds, and also corn in measure, which the king took into his hands for the Archbishop's debt. By another commission Hugh Matefry obtained custody of the manor of Wingham and Wingham Barton from the Archbishop's temporalities to answer for the issues just as the petitioners. The king also delivered to Hugh the standing corn of the Archbishop in Wingham and Wingham Barton for seed allowance worth £60 or more, of which the petitioners still remain unfulfilled, so much that four years and more later he went into court with his rolls and began to account, and thereafter is to depart without charge to the damage and peril of the petitioners, inasmuch as in the second year of his reign the king ordered delivery to Archbishop Meopham of all the aforesaid corn and chattels.
Nature of endorsement
Let them have an order to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer by writ under the great seal that they scrutinize the account rolls Hugh delivered to the exchequer, that he himself is responsible for the corn of which the petitioners remain charged, and that they discharge the petitioners of this and charge Hugh, notwithstanding that he has already accounted.
