Reference
SC 8/58/2862
Date
[? 1325-? 1350]
Description
Petitioners
Richard Longe of Dover.
Name(s)
Longe, Richard
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioner asks for letters to the Constable of Dover (or his lieutenant) that he should have peace and a remedy according to law and reason. He shows that he was (and still is) in the king's service when William Hurtin and his allies came and assaulted, battered and ill-treated him in spite of the king, and disrupted his service against the peace and to his great harm.
Nature of endorsement
Let him have a writ to the constable that he has justice, and let him have a writ of peace if he wishes.
Places mentioned
Dover, [Kent].
People mentioned
William Hurtin
Constable of Dover.
Note
No positive context has been established for this petition. The notes on the guard suggest? Edward II-Edward III, with reference to William Hurtin. The hand seems to place the petition before the middle of the fourteenth century, and a notional date of the second quarter of the century is suggested here.
