Description
Petitioners
Master and Brethren of St Leonard's Hospital in York.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioners ask that the king's officials in Galtres Forest have regard for their charters and confirmations and cease making various demands and oppressions on them such that the maintenance of their hospital is under threat. They state that the hospital was founded of the king's progenitors to provide alms and hospitality and consequently their predecessors bought various parcels of land in Galtres Forest from various men by charters, to hold in pure and perpetual alms to support the heavy costs of their house. The king's progenitors confirmed these grants to hold to themselves and their successors as of a franchise, quit of all manner of customs and secular demands. Then came the king's warden of the forest, the steward, foresters and other officials, demanding of them for their lands, for reasonable estovers in the forest and various other demands and oppressions contrary to the tenor of their charters etc.
Nature of endorsement
Let them have a writ in chancery to the steward, warden, and other officers that they allow the petitioners to be quit of encroachments according to their charters and confirmations.
