Description
Petitioners
Master and Brethren of St Leonard's Hospital in York.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners seek recovery of a carucate of land with appurtenances in Liddesdale in Scotland. They state that their predecessors were seised of the same as confirmed by each and every king of Scotland, until the time of William Fenger, when thieves from Scotland entered therein and killed their brothers and men, burned their houses and destroyed everything. Then Lord Soules in his time and others entered therein after the conquest and held the land until John de St John (by the king's verbal command) granted the same to the lady of Wake, Bucecourt and Soules, who entered therein and still hold the same.
Nature of endorsement
Make a writ from chancery to the Scottish chancery that they enquire of what title the said lands are held and how they entered into the said lands and by what right and in what manner etc., and upon this certify to the king.
