Description
Petitioners
Oliver Lemoigne.
Name(s)
Lemoigne, Oliver
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioner asks not to be disinherited by the warfare of the king's enemies or by the bailiffs of Otes de Grandison. He shows that Gilbert and Thomas are dead and that by reason of his wife (who is their sister) he is their next heir. He asks the king to grant him their lands, tenements and rents, which Sandwich has taken into the king's hands by reason of a bond made by Gilbert on the island of Guernsey. Grandison's bailiffs now remove by force and distrain contrary to custom from a parcel of land in the parish of St Andrew (which escheated to Gilbert from his father) and 36s ... in the aforesaid parish. The petitioner has also been deprived of a fee called St Eleine's fee in the aforesaid parish. The petitioner also asks not be distrained by Grandison's bailiffs of two quarters of wheat from parcels of land in the parish of St Martin, together with other rents etc.
Nature of endorsement
The king will appoint others to enquire into the same, which will be returned and the whole process scrutinized in chancery, and the petitioner will be provided with an account in respect thereof.
Places mentioned
Guernsey
St Andrew's parish, Guernsey
St Martin de la Bellehouse, Guernsey.
People mentioned
Gilbert de St Remy
Alice [Lemoign], wife of the petitioner and sister of Gilbert and Thomas
Thomas de Sandwich
Otes (Otto) de Grandison.
Note
The guard gives two possible dates: c. 1301 and c. 1322). The hand, and the apparently positive outcome of the petition in CCR 1296-1302, p. 418, indicate that the earlier date is the more likely and has been chosen here. The date of c. 1331 is suggested (without references) by Channel Islands Petitions, pp. 65-6.
