Description

Prior and Convent of Lenton.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioners seek recovery of the advowson of Horsley church and a renewed grant of the same, part of which supports the chantry at Lenton for the souls of the king and his ancestors. They state that Hugh de Byroun (who came with the conqueror) was lord of Horsley Castle and Horsley and granted the church to the Prior of Lenton and his successors forever in the time of King Stephen (confirmed by the bishop of Chester and ratified by Papal Bull and by Henry II and many other kings) by which title the petitioners held the church until the time of Henry III (the king's great grandfather) who seized their lands by writ of quare impedit and by default the advowson of Horsley Church came to the king and he presented his clerk, who was confirmed by the bishop. The petitioners sued to King Edward (the king's grandfather) for return of the advowson, which was granted by charter in exchange for the advowson of Felmersham church, but now a writ of quare impedit has been obtained in the king's name contrary to the aforesaid gifts and confirmations.
