Name(s)
de Laysingby, John
Addressees

Occupation
chaplain
Nature of request
The petitioner seeks recovery of the Hospital del Whel (Wheel Kirk) in Liddesdale, granted to him for life by charter for a small rent because of his service in the king's Scottish wars. He shows that he was seised of the hospital for more than two years until ousted, and William de Moules entered and remains seised thereof. The petitioner approached the king at Newburgh and had letters delivered under the privy seal to the chancellor of Scotland to uphold his right, which has not been done. It is well known to the king's council that Moules answered that this [the hospital] is his inheritance and not in the gift of the king or any other man, and has now leased the same to a layman for ten marks per year.
Nature of endorsement
An order for the steward of Scotland by writ under the seal of England to inspect the king's letters of gift to the hospital, as stated in this petition. The petitioner is to be restored to the same hospital in accordance with the form of the king's collation.
