Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Llanfaes.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioners ask the king to establish them in an assured position before he departs from Wales and to confirm it by his letters so that they do not fall into a state of beggary or worse. They show that they are English in blood and nationality, as also were their ancestors from ancient times, because of which, when the dominance of the Welsh was in its vigour (especially at the time when Madoc was raging in his fury), they were oppressed by the Welsh and deprived of their property. And because they reside in Wales among the Welsh they are reputed to be Welsh by the English and consequently have neither the status of Englishmen nor even of Welshmen, and are treated badly by both sides.
Nature of endorsement
Petition of the community of the burgesses of Llanfaes. When the town of Beaumaris has been built the king will determine about that and about Llanfaes, as shall seem expedient.
Places mentioned
Llanmaes (Llanfaes), [Anglesey, Wales].
People mentioned
Edward I, King of England
Madoc (Madog ap Llywelyn).
