Reference
SC 8/56/2795
Date
[c. 1336]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Langdon.
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Abbot of Langdon
Nature of request
The petitioner asks the king to order the treasurer, barons, and chamberlains of the exchequer to pay his expenses or make a convenient assignment in lieu. He shows that recently he was assigned by king and council to discuss in the company of Eleanor the king's sister, the performance and completion of her espousal to the duke. After the matter was completed he returned to England and accounted at the exchequer for his expenses in the journey (£19 15s 8d), for which he was assigned payment from the receipts of John Mauger, late sheriff of Hereford, by the treasurer who gave him a tally to deliver, but he has still not been paid, because the sheriff had not the means and is now dead, and the petitioner cannot levy from his goods and chattels.
Nature of endorsement
Let him explain the petition, as the sheriff had lands and tenements when he was in his office.
Places mentioned
Langdon, [Kent]
Hereford, [Herefordshire].
People mentioned
Eleanor [of Woodstock], the king's sister
[Reginald II], Duke of Guelders
John Mauger, late sheriff of Hereford.
Note
The accounts of the abbot were made in 1331 in connection with a marriage formalized in 1332; but this petition must date to at least 1336 since it refers to John Mauger as the late sheriff of Herefordshire, and he quitted that office in Jan 1336.
