Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/56/2790
Date
[c.1327]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Langley, knight.
Name(s)
de Langley, Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioner seeks discharge from an annual payment of £7 to the exchequer for custody of the park of Charlebury. He shows that his father held the park from King Edward (father of the present king) for £7 each year to the Exchequer, and in the time of the king's father custody was taken into the king's hands and remains with the [present] king, and the petitioner continues to pay £7 each year to the exchequer to his great distress.
Nature of endorsement
Let him have an order to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer that he receives no income from the said park, which is in the king's hands etc., and let him have his discharge as reason demands.
Places mentioned
Cornbury Park, [Oxfordshire].
People mentioned
John de Langley, father of the petitioner
[Edward III, King of England]
[Edward II, King of England].
Note
If the Langley family referred to here are the landed family in Warwickshire and Oxfordshire of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, then this petition must date after the death of John de Langley in 1326, when his son, Master Thomas Langley, took charge of the estate. CCR 1327-30, p. 7, provides a terminus a quo, but it probably dates to the early years of Edward's reign. See dating information for the related petition SC 8/56/2789.
