SC 8/56/2789
Date
[c.1327]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Langley, son and heir of John de Langley.
Name(s)
de Langley, Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioner seeks recovery of the park of Cornbury and nearby pasture as his rightful inheritance. He shows that custody of the park (which is a parcel of Wychwood forest) and the pasture was established to the father of the petitioner by inheritance from his ancestors since time without memory for £7 each year to the Exchequer. On 2 July in the tenth year of his reign (1317), the king's father by writ under his privy seal, ordered the petitioner's father to deliver to Roger de la Chambre the garden of the manor of Woodstock together with all the pasture, and that he should have allowance of the rent in the exchequer, which order was complied with and the said properties remain in the king's hands. Nevertheless, the petitioner's father in his time and the petitioner continue to be charged the aforesaid £7 to the exchequer year on year.
Nature of endorsement
Coram Rege.Because mention is made in the petition that the petitioner's father granted the properties to the king's father to hold in peace, let him have an order to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer that from the time the king's father was seised the petitioner is discharged from the rent.
Places mentioned
Cornbury Park, [Oxfordshire]
Wychwood Forest, [Oxfordshire]
Woodstock, [Oxfordshire].
People mentioned
John de Langley, father of the petitioner
Roger de la Chambre
[Edward III, King of England]
[Edward II, King of England].
Note
The order to the Treasurer in CCR 1313-18, p.511 would seem to date the removal of Langley from the keepership to Edward II's reign, thus establishing the date of the petition to that of Edward III, and presumably to the early years. If the Langley family referred to here are the landed family in Warwickshire and Oxfordshire of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, then this petition must date after the death of John de Langley in 1326, when his son, Master Thomas Langley, took charge of the estate. CCR 1327-30, p. 7, provides a terminus a quo.
