Description
Petitioners
Elizabeth de Langton, who was the wife of David de Langton.
Name(s)
de Langton, Elizabeth
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioner states that the king was held to her late husband in £340 for his stay in Wark Castle for which she has bills of the wardrobe from Northburgh, from the parliament held at York in year twelve of the king. Her husband pardoned the king of the £340, for which he was to be paid £100 through the king's letters to Sandale (then treasurer), which sum has not yet been paid. Now the petitioner's husband is dead and the exchequer has custody of his son and his lands are in the king's hands. She has bought the wardship and marriage from the treasurer and barons of the exchequer for eighty marks (half to be paid at the following Easter and the other at the following Michaelmas). She asks the king to order the treasurer and barons of the exchequer to allow the eighty marks from the £100 due and pay her the remainder for the maintenance of herself and her children, as the land is all ruined and she has no other means.
Nature of endorsement
Let her have an order to the treasurer and barons [of the exchequer] to void her debt. The debt to her husband is for the king's scrutiny. Coram Rege.
