Reference
SC 8/56/2781
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
People of the hundred of Lambourn.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners ask that certain men should be appointed to a commission of oyer and terminer in Berkshire, because Aylmer (an adherent of Despenser) assaulted a man such that he was in danger of his life, for which the hue and cry was raised according to the law of the land and for which assault Aylmer was outlawed, arrested and delivered to le Cleet (his associate), warden of the franchise of Lambourn, who allowed him to escape without implementing the hue and cry granted to the people of the hundred by the king. And now Aylmer and his lord do evil in the hundred from day to day to the measure of £40.
Nature of endorsement
Establish this through the common law.
Places mentioned
Lambourn, [Berkshire]
Berkshire.
People mentioned
William Aylmer
Hugh le Despenser, the son
Richard le Cleet.
Note
Notes on the guard assign this to 1322 (on the basis of spurious references); it is much more likely, given its comment of the Despensers, to date from the early reign of Edward III.
