Date
1361
Description
Petitioners
Thomas, Parson of Langar.
Name(s)
Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Parson of Langar
Nature of request
The petitioner seeks remedy for duress and false imprisonment by Conyngesby and his associates. He shows that he was robbed before Chartres in France and his groom accused Conyngesby's manservant in the court of the Marshalsea. The court awarded trial by combat, by which the petitioner feared irregularity and withheld his groom from the suit. Then Conyngesby accused the petitioner and his groom of conspiracy against his manservant and judgement was made against him in 100 marks, which was decided in the absence of the petitioner contrary to law. By reason of this error the king took the case into his hands and arranged a day for the parties before his council in England. During the adjournment Conyngesby and his associates came to the petitioner's house and took him to Lord Tiptoft's house in Sherwood and there forced him to make fine in £100 and later they threatened his life. Further, Conyngesby and his associates kidnapped the petitioner in Walbrook in London and imprisoned him, by reason of which he could not sue to the king.
Nature of endorsement
The parties are in agreement and Ardern is appointed to try the case in the Star Chamber in the palace of Westminster, Tuesday 23 February 1361. Conyngesby is found guilty and dismissed from the king's grace and the petitioner has compensation.
