Description
Petitioners
Thomas of Lancaster, Earl of Lancaster.
Name(s)
of Lancaster; Earl of Lancaster, Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioner seeks remedy for himself and his people of Easingwold and Huby in Galtres Forest, who customarily have adequate provision in housebot and heybot from the wood in the forest, overseen by the king's officers. On Clifford's orders they have been prevented from obtaining these things according to the custom of their ancestors from time without memory, namely, by supplying hounds to the petitioner each year. Through Clifford's orders the petitioner's franchise and the rights of his people are on the point of being lost. The petitioner also asks that he should not be disinherited nor his people deprived of their rights; they have been hindered by the king's officers from their forest way from Easingwold to Huby and from Huby to York, and from their way toward other vills (contrary to custom) without heavy payments made to the officers of the forest.
Nature of endorsement
Send letters to Clifford through the chancery that he and his officers desist from impeding the petitioner [and his people] from freely obtaining housebote, heybote and other forest rights, as their ancestors were accustomed to have.
