The petitioners ask for confirmation of a charter granting them the right of frankpledge in the manor of Shorwell on the Isle of Wight and the fines from the same, which were allowed on their account at the exchequer until Scot (then Paddebury and others) were let the farm of the Isle. Under an agreement between the petitioners and Isabella de Fortz, Lady of the Isle, it was agreed that all the Abbey's tenants were to attend the hundred at Carisbrooke twice each year for view of frankpledge and that the Abbess and her successors had three days to produce all the fines from their people of the manor in the court of the Lady of Newport, as shown in the indentured agreement and confirmed by an action of trespass against Isabella and her officers by the petitioners.
Nature of endorsement
Let gentlemen of the chancery be appointed to enquire into the matters contained in this petition and other grievances in the presence of the king's warden of the island, and returned into chancery. And to inspect the indentures and other ... and summon the steward of the chamber as [the matter] concerns the chamber, and the king's sergeants and others. The king will answer through the chancellor.
