Description

Abbot and convent of Kirkstall
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners ask the king to despatch a writ to his justices ordering them to pass judgement in accordance with the results of an inquest and enforce the law in the same matter. The petitioners show that they have long sued to king and council in parliament over certain parcels of waste and pasture, which they claim as appurtenant to their manor of Bernolueswik. These lands, held by the queen, were granted to de Lacy thus depriving Grymeston (the present Abbot's predecessor) of seisin and inquests were held on the orders of the king and queen and returned into chancery, and the case of the Abbot was found to be correct. The king's writ was then sent to his justices ordering them to implement the results of the inquest. The justices inspected the evidence and found the actions of the Abbot to be correct and that he should pursue the matter by petitioning the queen, which was done to the Abbot's satisfaction, but implementation of the results of the inquest was inordinately delayed by Scrope and his fellow justices, who refused to obey the first order.
