Reference
SC 8/54/2698
Date
[c. 1316]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Cymmer.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Cymmer state that the lieutenant of the Justiciar of North Wales is distraining them to build a bridge over the River Mawddwy, contrary to the tenor of their charters and privileges. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ to the Justiciar of Wales or his lieutenant, not to distrain him to do anything other than what he should do and is accustomed to do.
Places mentioned
Cymmer, [Merioneth, Wales]
North Wales
River Mawddwy.
People mentioned
Lieutenant of the Justiciar of North Wales.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1316', with reference to CPR 131-7 p.394, which is a pardon to the abbey of a sum of money which was wrongly exacted from them, but appears to have nothing to do with this matter. Petitions Relating to Wales p.76 also bases its dating on this pardon. The hand and the Latin endorsement would suggest that a date around this period is not implausible, but there appears to be no other evidence.
