The Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England states that William de Ferers, Earl of Derby, granted the hospital six pigs of his pannage in the forest of Needwood, and six pigs in the forest of Duffield, and that they were seised of them until these tenements came into the King's hand through the forfeiture of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, since when he has not been able to have livery of these pigs. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He is to show his charter in Chancery and if the charter agrees with the petition, certain faithful people are to be appointed to inquire, in the presence of the Keeper, into the truth of the contents of the petition and into other necessary articles. And, when the inquisition has been returned in Chancery, if what the petition claims is found to be true, the Keeper is to be ordered to allow the prior to have the pigs, as he had before the forfeiture.
