SC 8/54/2678A
Date
[? 1322-? 1330]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England (Knights Hospitaller).
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Prior and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England request confirmation of a charter of Henry II to the Templars, granting them a mark every year from every sheriff in England, and a mark from every city, town or castle paying the king £100 or more annually, which rent passed to the Hospitallers at the dissolution of the Templars, and which is being withheld from them.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered to search to see if the Master and brothers of the Temple were seised of the rent contained in the petition, and from what time they were seised of it; and when this has been returned in Chancery, the king is to be informed, and he is further to speak his will.
People mentioned
Henry [II], King of England
The Order of the Temple (Knights Templar).
Note
The petitioners express their complaint in the words 'la dite rente lour est unqore detenue' which would suggest that this petition does not date from too long after the granting of the Templars' lands to the Hospitallers in the early 1320s. From the hand and the French endorsement a date of about 1322 to 1330 seems reasonable.
