Reference
SC 8/54/2661
Date
[1327]
Description
Petitioners
People of Great Yarmouth.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people of Great Yarmouth make two requests:1) They ask for a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to give them an allowance in their farm for finding two ships with men at arms in the third year of the king's reign.2) They ask for an allowance in their farm or in other debts for finding eight ships in the king's fifteenth year. They have had a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer on this, in response to a previous petition in parliament, but they are refusing to give them an allowance for the mariners' wages, on the grounds that they were not specified in the first command.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first petition, they are to show the writ that they have had, as the petition claims.A writ is to be sent to the Treasurer and Barons etc., that they are to account with the burgesses concerning the things contained in the petition, and they are to examine the command etc., and they are to give an allowance etc., receiving the command from them. With regard to the second petition, they are to have a writ as before that they are to allow etc., and if there is some underlying reason why they ought not etc., then they are to inform the council of the reason.
Places mentioned
Grant Jernemuth (Great Yarmouth), [Norfolk].
People mentioned
John de Enefeld, king's sergeant at arms
John Perbroun, Admiral of the Fleet.
Note
CCR 1323-7 p.432 is dated 7 December 1325. This is probably the response to the previous petition, rather than to this one, as no mention is made of mariners' wages.CCR 1327-30 pp.39-40 is dated 12 February 1327. If it is assumed that this is a response to this petition, and CCR 1323-7 p.432 is a response to the previous petition, then 1327 seems a reasonable date for this petition.
