Description
Petitioners
Canons of Ivy Church in Clarendon
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The canons of Ivy Church make two requests:1) They state that when he enclosed the park of Clarendon, Edward II enclosed a croft and some other lands that had been given to them. They request a remedy.2) They request payment of alms of 100s from the manor of Clarendon to light their house, which has only been paid for the first four years after it was granted in Edward II's tenth year.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first petition, they are to show their charters in Chancery, and people are further to be appointed to inquire if they were seised by virtue of the charters of the croft and land named in the petition, and afterwards expelled by the father of the present king, as is claimed by the same petition, and if they have received anything in compensation for the said croft and land, and how much, and where, and of what value, and how much the said croft and land are worth annually, and what profit it is to the king annually if the said croft and land remain enclosed within the said park as they now are, and what harm it would be to him if they were delivered to the canons, and into other necessary articles. And the inquisition is to be returned in Chancery and the king informed. With regard to the second petition, they are to show their charters in Chancery and a writ is further to be sent to the keeper of the manor to pay the 100s. according to what has been done hitherto, and if there is a reason why he should not pay, he is to provide information about the reason in Chancery.
