Description

Community of Jews
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The community of Jews ask the King and council for their opinion on several matters:1) The new statutes state that a Jew is only to have seisin of half of any land or rent pledged to him for a debt, the other half to remain to the Christian who owes the debt, for his sustenance: if the debtor dies and the lands pass to someone who is rich enough not to need this sustenance, can the Jew have seisin of the whole until he has recovered the debt?2) They request clarification of the case where a Christian who owes money to a Jew has no lands or rents but only a large house in which he lives: what seisin will the Jew have as a pledge for his debt?3) They request the king's pity on their poverty, and that they might have permission to sell houses and rents to other Jews: as if they are not given this permission, they will have to knock them down and sell them as stone and timber.4) They complain that in buying and selling goods they are greatly disadvantaged by comparison with Christians, and ask that they might be able to live as they have done in the time of the king's ancestors since the conquest.
