Description
Petitioners
King's liege people of the Channel Islands
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The king's liege people of the Channel Islands state that their islands have suffered greatly from attacks by the French, and that they need a keeper to protect them. They therefore ask that the grant to hold the Islands at farm given to Peter Bernard de Pynsoles and Laurence de Gaylard might be repealed, and a suitable keeper appointed. They thank the king for John des Roches, their previous keeper.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council, if it please the king, that it is necessary that the Channel Islands, which are March country, are well and safely guarded, and specifically by people from England in whom the king can trust: and because this cannot be done without the king, this bill is to be sent before the king.

Note
CPR 1330-4 p.3 is dated at Nottingham, 9 September 1330, and this petition would seem to date from shortly after that. Peter Bernard de Pynsoles and Laurence de Gaylard are still keepers of the Channel Islands on 28 June 1331 (CCR 1330-3 p.324, but John de Roches appears to have been re-appointed by 10 December of that year (CCR 1330-3 p.388).
