Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Huntingdon
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
[The petition is badly damaged, and part of it is missing] The burgesses of Huntingdon ask that certain things might be specified and set down clearly in their charter, in aid of their farm, which it is impoverishing them to pay. They ask, among other things, that the king's Clerk of the Market [might not] interfere in their affairs; that the burgesses might be free and have the free customs they have enjoyed since ancient times; that they might have cognisance of certain pleas; and that they might have issues, fines and amercements in their town in aid of their farm.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Huntingdon, [Huntingdonshire]
People mentioned
The King's Clerk of the Market
Note
CChR 1341-1417 p.94 is dated 10 April 1348. The liberties specified include cognizance of all pleas, and return of writs so that no minister of the king will enter the town to execute the same except in default of the bailiffs, so it seems likely to be the charter requested by the petition.
