Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/53/2605A
Date
[1327-1332]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Horneclyf (Horncliffe), Constable of Bamburgh castle
Name(s)
de Horneclyf (Horncliffe), Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Bamburgh, [Northumberland].
Nature of request
Robert de Horneclyf asks the king and council to order the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to allow him, on his account, from the issues of Bamburgh castle, the customary wages for a knight in time of war from the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady in the king's first year to the following Christmas, as, while they will allow suitable wages for his men, for which he has an indenture, the transcript of which is sewn to this petition, they will only pay him as in time of peace.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered that, when they have examined the indenture, they are to give the said Robert an allowance for the customary wages for a knight for the period contained in the indenture, so that for the same period he has no allowance for other wages or another fee for the said keeping.
Note
Robert de Hornclif was appointed as Constable of Bamburgh castle on 8 February 1327 (CFR 1327-37 p. 5) and his successor, John de Kyngeston, was appointed on 28 January 1332 (CFR 1327-37 p.296). This petition must date from somewhere between these two dates, probably reasonably soon after the end of the period for which he wants wartime wages (Christmas 1327).
